A few weekends ago, I had an extremely rare opportunity to see the documentary film, Miss Sharon Jones, at Nitehawk Cinema in Brooklyn. For those of you that do not yet know Miss Sharon Jones-- PLEASE, PLEASE start listening A.S.A.P. to Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings. (!!!) I'm a huge fan of theirs, so is President Obama, and yet-- I keep "forgetting to get tickets" * (like some of you might understand...hint* hint* wink, wink) as I've heard she is an INCREDIBLE LIVE PERFORMER-- even referred to as a "Female James Brown." (!!!) Their music is so much FUN, and so beautiful-- but, I have also heard that Sharon has been battling Pancreatic Cancer.
I assumed that the film would be about Sharon, the Dap-Kings, their amazing tours, recordings, songwriting, rehearsals, performances-- the "ROCK STAR LIFE" (those HORNS!)-- however, it was much bigger than that. It was about an incredible human being, standing at 4' 11", fighting for her strength, her music, her band, and her life.
To make the screening that much sweeter, THE Sharon Jones was there, SHE answered questions after the film, she had the entire movie theater soaring to their feet and sending her as much love and strength as we could! We were a collective audience in love and support, and I know she felt it. We all did.
SO, I'm sending LOVE & STRENGTH TO MISS SHARON JONES ! ! !
I'm also sending LOVE & STRENGTH to any and ALL of you that might be hurting right now.
I'm sending LOVE to all of you that SUPPORT the arts.
I'm sending LOVE to all of you that are reading this post!
LIFE is not easy, but when we have LOVE...
